Style
She was a documentary photographer and made history because of her most famous photo called migrant mother. This picture invoked powerful emotions to people. Compared to a painting photographs emit stronger feelings, because you can actually see the person's expression. Lange's photographs also got messages through easier, because you could see the conditions that the people were living in, and they were realistic because only the people's expression was staged. Most times a painting is something that the painter thought of not an actual realistic issue taking place.

Philosophy
Dorothea Lange wanted to share a message through her pictures. Most times the message invoked on her pictures was political. The reason why the messages given on her pictures were political was, because she worked for the FSA. Also she was a documentary photographer. On one of her photos migrant mother she was showing everyone just how bad the conditions were at the time of the great depression. Taking these pictures was a way of her demonstrating the social and political injustices in the U.S.

Contemplating
The difference between my image and Lange's is that in the picture titled migrant mother the lady has her right hand holding her head, and in my picture my mom has her left hand holding her head. Another difference is that in Dorothea Lange's image the mother is surrounded by two kids and one baby. Since I only had my little brother to take a picture of I only have one kid surrounding my mom in my picture. Sharing Smiles
A difference between my picture and Dorothea Lange's picture of the "happy camper" is that the shadow of the kid is on his right side, when in my picture the shadow is oh his left side. Another difference is that the kid on Dorothea Lange's picture has something on his face and his clothes, when in my picture my little brother doesn't have anything on him. Something that I think looks somewhat like the original picture is that the kid is playing with his hands in the picture. Since I notice that I told my brother to smile and play with his hands so that my picture could look somewhat similar to the original one. Blank Mind
A difference between my photo and Lange's photo is that in her photo she has a girl laying on a field, and in my picture I have my brother laying on grass which looks clearly different in black and white. Another difference is that in my picture my little brother is looking straight up when in Lange's photo the girl is looking to the side. A similarity is the way my little brother has his hand over his hand and the other one to his side also the angle at which I took the photo. |
Personal Artist statement
In my first picture I really wanted to make sure that the photo was focused and not blurry because if it were blurry then the details of the picture wouldn't stand out. Also I made sure that the lighting was just right and not over exposed. The stairs in the background give a feeling of depth which I feel makes the picture look even better. A challenge that I had while taking this picture was that on all the pictures that I took my mom was looking to the wrong side so when editing it I had to flip the image. I feel like overall my picture turned out pretty good considering I didn't have the right amount of people in it. In my second picture I like the way the light is hitting half of my brother's face and the other half is somewhat darker. I feel like that is because this picture was taken inside which makes the lighting not so bright. I tried following the rule of thirds for my photo but if i did my brother would be to far down. A challenge I had while taking this picture was making the background look like the one in the original picture. Finally a success I had was the way my little brother posed that made the picture resemble the original a lot. In my third picture something that I included was the rule of thirds in which the person's face is in the center of the picture. Also I feel like in this picture my little brother's face is the emphasis or focal point of the picture. I had two challenges while taking this picture. The first one was taking this picture at the same angle at which Dorothea took the picture. For me this was kind of hard since I only wanted to get the tall grass in the background instead of the trees. The second challenge was finding a field where there was a lot of tall grass but that was difficult so I took this at a park with some tall grass in the background. Overall I think that my picture looks really good and somewhat similar to Dorothea Lange's .
